The Kruger National Park is home to prolific birdlife. We had a magnificent sighting of a mating pair of Bateleurs and later a magnificent Martial Eagle. Around every corner, you find magnificent bird sightings.

We found a beautiful leopard in a tree with an impala kill. We watched in awe at the magnificent sighting of this leopard adjusting and got incredible images.

One afternoon we came across a  crash of white Rhinos, who wanted to leave the river bed, but a male Rhino standing on top of the riverbank would not let them as he wanted them to stay in his territory.

our highlights

We highly recommend Lukimbi to our clients who wish to stay inside the Kruger National Park. Not only are they allowed to off-road in their concession they are located in the South of the Park and the sighting are out of this world.

We had three incredible sightings of two separate lionesses with their cubs. We were off-roading and got stuck in a ditch with a well known aggressive female to the left of the vehicle.
We were within a few meters of her and she growled and snarled at us until we eventually got unstuck and moved away from her.

On another occasion, we had two cubs with lionesses they walked towards the vehicle and sat right next to it. They looked at us and we watched on as they played. And this is one thing I love about the Kruger how close you get to predators.

We visited a  Hyena den on Lukimbis concession a few times, and we had the absolute best sighting of the sweetest little hyena pup! There were a few older pups who were very curious and came up close to the car and even nibbled on the tyres and boots of our tracker. And any sharp movement and they all disappeared back into the bush.

Our first sighting of Wild Dogs was at Lukimbi, they were hunting and we followed them and eventually caught up to them with their pups. They were big enough to join the pack in hunting but was such a special sight. Not only had we not seen wild dogs. We had found them and their pups it was truly special.

We also saw the lappet face vulture which is a rare sighting, and the Southern Ground hornbill which is always a great sight! The South of the Kruger National Park is known for a plethora of birds so if you are a birdie you won't be disappointed.

One thing you must do whilst stay at Lukimbi is the walk down to the crocodile river. Where you sit on the rocks and are able to see hippos, crocodiles and so much more.

There is also a resident leopard that resides close to the lodge, while we were there he stayed under the last chalet all the way to the end. We had a sighting of him and he was magnificent. We also had the pleasure of seeing around three hundred plus buffalo cross all around us, and we watched as a red-billed oxpecker had a mud bath.

On our return to Lukimbi, we were able to see two lionesses with three cubs. When we found them the three cubs were across the riverbed perched on a boulder the lioness contact called and they came running over across the river bed. We watched them play in the riverbed and feed.

We had a sighting of a male leopard on a kill when suddenly out of nowhere two hyenas came and stole the kill from him. The leopard watched on for a few moments and eventually moving on as more hyenas showed up. We watched as the hyenas fought over the meal and eventually both ran off in different directions.

our highlights

Located in the South, we had great bird sightings as on three occasions seeing little goshawks, yellow-billed oxpeckers and my absolute favourite the Malachite Kingfisher.

On route to Mdluli, we had a wonderful sighting on the side of the road of an active hyena den where we saw the sweetest pups. And a small group of Roan antelope which was a first for us.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a male leopard walking. As soon as he heard the vehicle he crouched down. To the point, no one else could see him. Eventually, he began moving when the engine wasn't running.

We had our drinks stop at a dam, and had the sweetest sighting of a baby hippo that was only a week old. We watched as the baby hippo came out of the water with his mother and played on the sandbank.

Shishangeni offers an unforgettable African safari that has staked its claim as one of the top Safari Lodges in the Kruger National Park.

our highlights

We had a great sighting of a female cheetah walking down to the pan in front of Shawu. We watched as she drank water nervously and constantly watched her surroundings. She later began to move off and we followed her into the bushveld. We were also able to see her the following day hunting.

One afternoon we found a coalition of five male lions who were all brothers.

With Shishangeni being located in the South we had magnificent bird sightings, due to it being close to the crocodile river we saw phenomenal sightings of African fish Eagles, the purple heron and a host of water birds.

One morning drive we found a large number of vultures in the trees. Our ranger decided to off-road and see what was there. We found a male impala who had been attacked by a snake that had completely paralyzed the impala and he was lying on his side with some movement left. We eventually left as there was nothing we could do for the impala. We returned that afternoon to no vultures in the trees, we off-roaded and found just bones left of the impala.

We found sleeping lions near the dam, with a herd of elephants passing them by a few meters.

We had morning and afternoon bush stops on the riverbank, which was out of this world as there was always a plethora of birdlife and hippos.

our highlights

On our first drive, we stopped at a picnic spot to have our sundowners, and by the water was a dead Rhino that had a pride of Lions with cubs feeding on it. The trees all around the watering hole were covered in birds of prey as vultures. The Rhino had been in a confrontation with a bull elephant and unfortunately died.

By the dam, that afternoon we saw two vultures mating, whilst other love pairs were all around. We also found hippos, a water monitor and more.

Hamiltons rooms are located on the river bed. And every afternoon we had a plethora of animals coming down to drink. From baboons to Elephants to waterbuck. There was always something by the rooms which was always very exciting.

One evening we were heading back to the lodge when we came across two Honeybadger running in the road in front of the vehicle. We followed behind them for kilometres slowly closing the gap and as we got close to the honey badgers the one aggressively squealed and they ran into the bush.

Leaving Hamiltons we saw a magnificent sighting of a male leopard crossing the road in front of us. We have prolific sightings of birds a top on my list was the African Barred owlet, lappet face vulture and magnificent rollers.

Rhino Post

COPY AND PASTED BELOW

Rhino Post Safari Lodge and Plains Camp have been offering a chic alternative to the traditional park visit, with exciting extra options thrown in. We have been nominated for and received awards, and developed a following of regular guests and friends that we look forward to seeing at least once a year.  Some guests on their first visit are surprised by the ways in which we differ from both the standard Kruger Park experience and the trendy private lodge experience.  Ninety five percent of them love it and keep us really busy with referrals and repeat visits, and five percent of them don’t understand the differences.  So here’s how we’re different, and why:

Rhino Post Safari Lodge is not just a beautiful, a contemporary design built from canvas, wood and glass - it blends into the natural surrounds with no sculpted gardens or fences. The ambience is relaxed and friendly. Guests join their guides and management around the dinner table in the sociable atmosphere of the Kruger Camps, while enjoying the level of service and luxury expected from any upmarket game lodge.

our highlights

A birdie is someone who takes the simple joy in viewing birds that are not regularly seen or even just birds in general, for us Rhino Post was the place where we saw more Kori Bustard than we have ever seen on any of our trips, as well as Southern ground hornbills, one with a dead snake in its beak flicking it around to break it up.

Driving along the main roads in Kruger, we came across a lot of lions, either walking down the roads, or sleeping off to the side, one particular sighting was a lioness in the river bed with her 2 small cubs, that we got a slight glimpse of.

Seeing 3 young Saddle billed storks flying overhead and our guide being quite shocked at so many together, we eventually watched them land back with mom and sat in awe as she had managed to keep all 3 chicks alive almost to adult hood.

Crossing one of the bridges on Kruger’s main roads, on a fallen down tree was a Goliath Heron pruning itself, the last time we had seen one was our trip 3 years ago.

Driving home one evening in the dark, coming around a corner we came across a young female leopard in the road crouching down flat to the ground, with a bush baby in the background complaining that it could see her, we noticed that she was stalking some impala up on the ridge, we sat with her for about 30 min watching her move closer and closer, moving into a drainage line and then disappearing into the night. We sat for a few more minutes trying to hear the alarm calls or a kill being made but nothing.

Sunset dam as many Kruger regulars would know its an amazing spot to see different bird life, stopping there early one morning, we had hippos with Grey Herons riding their backs, crocodiles minding their own business and coming out on the dry sand to bask in the sun. Trees full with Yellow-billed storks all getting warmed up by the morning light. On the further side of the dam where plenty of African Spoonbills, next to them under the bushes where Spotted (Water) Thick-knee’s all getting some shade and sun at the same time.

Our last drive with Rhino Post, driving back to the lodge we came across a gorgeous big male lion, following behind him his 2 sons’. A rather abnormal site as the big male moved away from his brother coalition and so to make himself strong and to not loss territory, he got his 2 sons to form a coalition with him to protect his territory.

our highlights

A bird we have never seen before a Southern White-faced Owl, we heard it doing a contact call, and sat, car off and tried to find it, scanning the trees with the torch we eventually spotted it up near the top of the tree, there it sat just contact calling and moving its head around to try pick up a contact call back.

The Outpost is not really a place one goes for spotting big game, it is more the breath-taking landscape that one goes there for, from having drinks stop in the Limpopo River with Zimbabwe to our left, Mozambique next to that and South Africa on our right, it is honestly spectacular. The fever tree forest hosting bird life like no other, you stand in the forest just listening to the abundance of birds chirping and watch them flying around. Around the corner from the fever tree forest is a vast dam traveling almost into the fever tree forest and in the trees are numerous nests of Yellow-billed Storks with the chicks standing waiting for the parents to return with food.

Lagan (forgot the name) gorge a small little walk up a rocky out crop, you get to the top and have the most spectacular view of the river winding its way through the gorge below you, with greenery covering everywhere you look. Birds flying over, it is honestly a phenomenal view point.

Southern tree hyrax, as common a squirrel along with the common tree squirrel sighting up in the north of Kruger, they acrobat themselves from ledges that a person would not dare even get close to, basking in the sun and climbing over head in the trees, it was definitely a first for us.
